Over ons

About Jan:
29 (almost 30 when we leave), born in Bremen, Germany.

Studied business management & economics and after that worked in maritime insurances. Decided it was time to do something more relevant that fitted his personality better and started to work at a sail service company.

Loves being outside and has a strong need to `just do something`. Truely appreciates being with honest, upright, open and heartful people (although needs his space ;-D ) and is fond of organising stuff. Is really good in doing handicraft, dedicates much time to helping others and is simply really fun to be with! Eats anything (despite of his diabetes which he strictly monitors)
Values freedom and self-determination over many other things, next to spending time with those that he really loves.

About Marjolein
30 years old, born in Groenveld in true Westfrisian Dutch countryside.

Graduated from Delft as an Industrial Design Engineer, ended up at little consultancy for design management.

Loves anything that has something to do with creativity (painting!), loves music and plays the piano. Is crazy enough to join in on any activities Jan comes up with (from wild water canoeing and kitesurfing to speed tobogganing and wintertouring through Scandinavia :)) although might need a little push sometimes. Values family and love above anything, and loves to get inspired by new things, people and cultures.

Over onze reis

Why do we do this?
One year, just the two of us, being out there, just feeling and living freedom.

Its the journey that leads us, not the destination. It's about gaining new experiences, meeting new people and cultures and finding ourselves again.

About how we will travel:
Therefore we've deliberately decided not to book a round-the-world-ticket, for two reasons. We want to be flexible, and we want to take it slow. we want to be able to decide to go to for example Sri Lanka if we want to, or leave it out when we don't feel like it. But more importantly, we don't want to have the shock of a 20 hour flight to the other side of the world, with your body not understanding what had just happened.

We also want to take our time; we don't want to be just another pair of tourists that passes by even though we will probably look like one and also do the touristuff as well :D. If you really want to understand and learn something from a culture, you will have to spend some time with the locals, the more the better, and that means we don't want to rush it and try to get the feeling of how people live what they value the most and how they perceive the world.

It's going to be a low-budget travel (as always ;) ). But it does mean that we are for example taking our tent and will rather look for hostels than hotels (let's see how we feel about that in a ferw months!) As for the tent: we'll have to see whether it is possible to camp due to safety reasons, but we'll worry about that later and if a hostel costs just 2 USD it might be alright to drop there :))

Where will it take us?
In August 2012, we start up north, on more or less known territory, to take some time to breathe, test all equipment and make sure that we get a bit at ease before running into situations that are totally new.
From Oslo, we hopefully get to Trondheim, Lofoten, Tromsø and maybe even up to the highest point of the world but that depends on the prices and time we have.

From Scandinavia, we will head eastward. After a little stop near Stockholm and discovering the Alands, Helsinki and Tallinn, we will aim to get to St. Petersburg and Moscow. The Transsiberian will take us to Irkutsk (3 days at the Baikalsea) and Ulaanbataar in Mongolia. After 2 weeks of hiking or whatever in the Mongolian desert we pick up the last part to Beijing, China.

After that, not much is planned. We really wanted to go to Tibet, but it looks like we will have to exclude it due to budget reasons and the policital reasons. Nepal is definitely on the list. Hiking, doing tea=house-treks (maybe camping is not such a smart idea with snow leopards running around ;-) ) and perhaps seeing a glimpse of the Mount Evererst, although that area is very touristic. Next on the list are Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Skri Lanka. We leave out Indonesia, as it will surely be too hot for us ;-) Maybe we also might go east first and visit Japan and Taiwan before we head to Thailand etc.
Tasmania is supposed to be wonderful, and we will definitely revisit New Zealand. By that time it will be feb/march 2013, maybe even later. Depending on how much time we have left, a mini-stop in South-Africa to visit a friend or South-America would be possible.
And if nothing turns out the way we want it, the alternative is that we spend 4 months paddling down the Yukon in Canada/USA  ;-)
